BAE Systems Surface Fleet Solutions staff make final preparations for the launch. The loops of wire hawsers along the side of the hull connect her to piles of chain, some of which can be seen in the lower mid section of this picture. For Dauntless, four 80 tonne piles of chain (two attached to either side) were used to gradually check the momentum of the ship once afloat and bring her to a halt. The spliced eye of the hawser is held in the white anchor points by a strong metal pin. Note the rope, descending from the ship's foredeck above, that is connected to the pin. Once the ship has been stopped this rope will be used to pull out the pin thus releasing the 'umbilicals' that connect the ship to her birthplace - to which she will never return. The white anchor points, which are fixed to strong points behind the hull plating will be removed during the outfitting of the ship.
