Down at Ardrossan Harbour, the winter Arran service was being operated by the 16-year old Caledonian MacBrayne ferry Caledonia. Originally built as the Swedish Stena Line's ferry Stena Baltica. this ship had been bought by the Caledonian Steam Packet Company in 1969 to start a new roll on / roll off service between Ardrossan and Brodick on the Isle of Arran. Although later replaced by the larger Clansman in summer, in the early 1980s Caledonia returned to operate the winter service. In the summer months, at this time, she operated between Oban and Craignure on the Isle of Mull.
