By this time work had commenced to replace the steel plating in the windows areas of Waverley's fore and aft main deck saloons. In this view the new plating can be seen in place but the window apertures have still to be burned out.
The engineering shops of the Scottish Machine Tool Corporation in Elliot Street can be seen in the background. It was formerly part of the enginebuilding worlds of David Rowan & Co. Rowan's built marine engines for over a century and became part of the Lithgow Group - the Port Glasgow based firm that was the largest shipbuilding company in the world at the time. Latterly, Rowan's merged with the Fairfield SB & E Co but the move failed to secure its future and Rowan's closed in 1965.
