Stuart Cameron > At the start of 1982 the groundbreaking Western Ferries' vessel Sound of Islay was laid-up, under the attention of Waverley Steam Navigation Company staff, at the paddle steamer's then basr at No 52 Stobcross Quay. Sound of Islay and Waverley are seen here alongside the WSN worskshops and office building at Stobcross Quay. These were in a location now occupied by the Crowne Plaza Hotel (originally the Forum Hotel when opened in 1989).
Stuart Cameron > Westrn Ferries Sound of Islay berthed at Stobcross Quay in the days before the redevelopment of this area into the SECC, Clyde Auditorium (Armadillo), City Inn, etc and before the construction of Bell's Bridge, the Millenium Bridge and the Clyde Arc (Squinty Bridge). Subsequently, Sound of Islay, built by Ferguson Brothers (Port Glasgow) Ltd in 1967 was sold for further service in Newfoundland.
Stuart Cameron > Following her sale to Waverley Steam Navigation, the World's Last Seagoing Paddle Steamer, Waverley, has been operated from a base at Anderston Quay, Glasgow from 1975 to 1977. With impending redevelopment of the quayside at Andeston Quay the WSN base moved to this location in one-time port warehouses and offices at Stobcross Quay. Across the river can be seen the old dockside sheds at Plantation Quay, a berth that would become the paddle steamer's base over 25 years later in 2004. After five years at Stobcross Quay the paddler's base was moved again, to allow for the redevelopment of the Queen's Dock and Stobcross Quay into the SECC. WSN and the paddler moved to No 35 Lancefield Quay, just downstream of the 1975 base. Subsequently, as the old dock sheds at Lancefield were redeveloped for residential purposes, the paddler moved her berth back to Anderston Quay although the offices remained in the Lancefield Quay building. The construction of the Clyde Arc bridge in 2005-06 forced the paddler to relocate again her base berth, to Plantation Quay at the new Glasgow Science Centre, in 2004.
Stuart Cameron > In January 1982, Glasgow and the West of Scotland experienced its most prolonged period of deeply sub-zero temperatures for many years. Temperatures remained around -20oC for almost 3 weeks and the River Clyde had a thick covering of ice, from bank to bank, as far downriver as Govan. This view shows Waverley, with the ferry Sound of Islay and a specialist heavy lift cargo ship astern, frozen in.

By this time work had commenced to replace the steel plating in the windows areas of Waverley's forward main deck saloon and dining saloon. In this view the new plating can be seen in place but the window apertures have still to be burned out.

The engineering shops of the Scottish Machine Tool Corporation in Elliot Street can be seen in the background. It was formerly part of the enginebuilding worlds of David Rowan & Co. Rowan's built marine engines for over a century and became part of the Lithgow Group - the Port Glasgow based firm that was the largest shipbuilding company in the world at the time. Latterly, Rowan's merged with the Fairfield SB & E Co but the move failed to secure its future and Rowan's closed in 1965.
Stuart Cameron > A later view of the work to replace plating around Waverley's main deck windows with the window frame fitted in the newly burned out and prepared apertures Another hull plate has been burned out for replacement on the lower deck forward of the port sponson.
Stuart Cameron > Some commercial port operations were still being undertaken from the Princes Dock in 1982. In this view the specialist heavy lift vessel Aberthaw Fisher is berthed in the Princes Dock Canting Basin, in front of Govan Town Hall, awaiting the delivery of a huge, specialist boiler from the Babcock factory in Renfrew. The boiler was to form part of the secondary cooling system at one of the Advanced Gas-cooled Reactor (AGR) nuclear power stations at Heysham or Hartlepool. Aberthaw Fisher and sister vessel, Kingsnorth Fisher, were operated on behalf of the Central Electricity Generating Board by James Fisher of Barrow-in-Furness.
